Review|Sirens of the Sea

Category: Music
Genre: Dance/DJ
Artists: Above & Beyond pts. Oceanlab ft. Justine Suissa

One of the better side projects in EDM. Who can forget the essential trance track Satellite. Oceanlab is back and they've got a really awesome album out. Here are my thoughts...

I really like that this album is really chilled and steady. Great sounding melody and vocals. Justine Suissa provides angelic vocals (just the way I like it) to the tracks. Again production on these tracks were not short changed by one beat.

I am really digging Sirens of the Sea (also the name of the album). This track got my attention when I heard the hypnotic Kyau & Albert Vocal Mix from Worldvibe. Other tracks worth mentioning are: If I Could Fly, Breaking Ties, Miracle, Come Home, On A Good Day.

As far as I can say these juicy morsels of Trance goodness are brimming with potential. Yep these chilled and steady tracks are very very very eligible to become hot and pumping anthems once DJ/Producers inevitably pic…

Off to HKG

Headed off to Hong Kong this evening. Will have to leave the office in a few minutes to get to the airport 3 hours before my flight.

Smart has an USD 10/day Surf-All-You-Can promo so hopefully I can do some blogging/micro-blogging in HKG.

Can't wait to see my good friend Cubie and of course to eat HKG food!

See you on the other side kiddies.

Where are the WM Pro QWERTY Bars?

**Warning Brain Fart Coming**

When the Sprint Treo 800w was announced I was excited. WiFi and GPS on a Treo... Finally! Since the GSM version hasn't been announced yet, I wasn't shocked into buying one. I've had a chance to think about what the 800w has to offer (I don't expect the GSM release to differ drastically from this device apart from the type of network).

I fear that the more reviews I read about the 800w the more it's loosing it's appeal on me. Right now the WiFi button and the QWERTY keyboard are the only things I am looking forward to. It seems that the device is too late into the game. Unless palm improves their GSM release (higher capacity battery, better soft keys) I might skip this Treo completely.

I will be taking a close look at the hp iPAQ 900 series which has almost identical specs to my TyTN2 but in a QWERTY bar form factor. If it had VGA I'd be knocking on hp's door right now. I hope I see one in HKG this week and get to play with it.

What I Want In Windows Mobile 7

1. Built in MMS support for Messaging
2. Change the Delete softkey in Messaging to New Message (pre-WM5)
3. Improve Pocket Internet Explorer.
4. Out of the box support for multiple languages.
5. Improve Windows Media Player make it stylus free.
6. More to follow

Coffee Time with El-Freudo

Having coffee and cigs. I had a pretty vivid and disturbing dream I wouldn't call it a nightmare though maybe a mini-mare (if there's such a thing).

When I was attending university we briefly discussed dreams in one of our psychology classes. I think El-Freudo may be on to something when he said: 'dreams are the highway to the sub-concious.' That being the case alarm bells are ringing albeit not loudly. Mamang Sorbetero loud probably.

People always say a lawyer who defends himself is a fool. Is it safe to assume then that a psych major who psycho-analyzes himself is a fool as well? Ha! We all know the answer to that!

Ok I'll stop being a fool and just be more aware of my environs. As our real American heroes say: Knowing is half the battle, yo Joe! (we can probably scratch the last part, unless of course Dubya decides to invade the PI too).

I will end this brain fart with a line from the code:

There is no emotion, there is peace.

Review|Batman: The Dark Knight [NO SPOILERS]

Category: Movies
Genre: Comics Adaptation
Starring: Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Morgan Freeman
In the DC Universe Batman is one of the most well known characters. I like him because he is a hero who doesn't have super/mutant/magic/alien powers. He just uses his gadgets and brains to defeat his opponents. He is one of the most driven heroes you will ever see. I daresay he is among 1 of my fave heroes.

What I liked about BMTDK, Heath Ledger gave an amazing performance as the Joker. I mean if you entitled this movie as 'The Rise of the Joker' I wouldn't mind at all. Ledger really shined in this movie and I'm not saying that because this is his last film. I also liked that Caine, Freeman, and Oldman came back to lend their talent to the film. I felt that Aaron Eckhart did a good job as Harvey Dent/Two Face. I did not like the actress change for Rachel simply because it was so glaring and the character had …

STAR WARS The FORCE Unleashed

Unleash the FORCE On September 16, 2008

Story

The next chapter in the Star Wars saga, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed , tells the story of Darth Vader’s Secret Apprentice, a mysterious figure trained by the menacing Sith Lord, to hunt down the last of the Jedi.
Set in the dark times between Episodes III and IV, the story is both a continuation of the prequel trilogy – exploring the aftermath of Order 66, which called for the immediate execution of all Jedi, and focusing on the continued rise of Darth Vader – and a direct bridge to the Original Trilogy. The Force Unleashed will forever change the fate of the Galaxy and explain key plot points that directly lead into events in Star Wars: A New Hope.
The Secret Apprentice’s journey takes him across the Galaxy—from the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk to the junkyard planet Raxus Prime and the mushroom-covered planet, Felucia.
He is aided in his dangerous missions by a loyal sidekick PROXY - a prototype holodroid with amazing abilities, and an a…

Ravers Blinded by Lasers

My friend Cubie sent this to me:
--
Up to 30 partygoers at an outdoor rave have been partially blinded by a laser light show.

Health officials confirmed 12 cases of laser-blindness from the event, with reports suggesting up to 17 more.

Some of those affected have lost up to 80 per cent of their vision.

Guests at the Aquamarine Open Air Festival in Kirzhach, Russia, began seeking medical help days after the show, complaining of vision problems.

Review|Cream Ibiza 2008

Category: Music
Genre: Dance & DJ
Artist: Various Artists - Mixed by Paul van Dyk

I've been looping this 2 CD album on my device for a few days now and trying to digest the music. Here are my thoughts...

I am liking the track selection that PvD did for this compilation. The mixing is also not bad. The album keeps a high energy feel which I think is important for any album. No dull moments or lulls it's dance and trance music all the way. It'll be a good idea to add this to you music collection. Trust in Trance Kiddies.

Review|Journey to the Center of the Earth [PLOT / NO SPOILERS]

Category: Movies
Genre: Book Adaptation / Remake
Starring: Brendan Fraser

I didn't quite enjoy this movie. Well maybe because I read the book. I felt...

that the movie was entertaining, the effects were very very well made BUT somehow I felt that the movie was too dumbed down or made to commercialized to get maximum viewership and not really expressed the essence of the book. I hear it is better on IMAX but I am not complaining about the effects here I am complaining about story and character build up. I'd say watch it if you're extremely bored or if you can catch it on IMAX for the FX.

Review|The Warlords [PLOT / NO SPOILERS]

Category: Movies
Genre: War / History
Starring: Jet Li / Andy Lau / Takeshi Kaneshiro

This movie was really nice and dealt with a lot of complex human emotions ranging from war, the greater good, ethics, brotherhood, trust, betrayal and much more.

It's basically a 'based on' type of film. Tracing the 18th century exploits of a General and 2 bandits who swore a blood oath of brotherhood. Their backgrounds, hopes, aspirations clash eventually.

My only complaint would be was that it was released dubbed instead of sub titled. I still feel that since it's native tongue was Chinese it should have been released sub titled. The action sequences were both phenomenal and some of the scenes raised very good points about ethics and morality. A good watch.

1 Million 3G iPhones Already, and What is Globe Doing?

Apple Inc. is claiming 1 million 3G iPhones sold... Not surprising since unlike it's predecessor this one was released to more than 1 country [about 70 countries world wide]. I am still curious why Globe Telecom the company who won the exclusive to disribute the iPhone isn't using it to increase it's subscriber base. Where are the data plans and what not for the iPhone? When will they start selling it here? If they don't hurry and make it competitive. Jailbreak would come and they'd loose their advantage with exclusivity.

Review|Green Maris [This is Hotpot Awesomeness]

I saw my friend and food eating buddy Shoty when I was in Vmall a while ago. We decided to eat Hot Pot at Green Maris. There is something about eating hot pot on a rainy evening... it's definitely WIN! Add to that your choice of soup/s [we had sate and clear soup] and choice of goodies to cook and you have yourselves a meal by YOU and FOR YOU!

So we tried to call on the troops much like King Leonidas tried to call on the other Greeks... Unfortunately we didn't have more troops for the battle ahead, not their fault it was spur of the moment. We then proceeded to order.

palm Treo 800w has Landed... Now Waiting for GSM

Saw this bit of news via twitter friend jkendrick

palm press release
jkontherun
--
The good news: palm finally included WiFi and even GPS on this device. Nothing surprising really as most mobiles already [um 2 or 3 years ago?] have this on board. palm is just keeping up with the competition but barring it having an espresso maker or a spork there is nothing über special about it. It's good too see that palm has not moved away from their forte of QWERTY bar goodness. One thing that has been bugging me is that other manufacturers have been trying too hard to go head to head with the iPhone. Being a staunch user and supporter of hardware input it was frustrating to see devices loosing their hardware for touchscreens. Touch is good for navigation but I believe QWERTY is best for data entry. I am feeling luke warm about the 320x320 screen resolution the higher res means a nicer display but I am not sure if developers [especially the small freeware makers] will be updating their apps to s…

3 Reasons Why I Think the 3G iPhone is Important Even If I'm Not Getting One

1st I would like to say that I won't be getting a 3G iPhone I still think it's not the phone for me, perfectly happy with Windows Mobile.

That being said I still think it's an important device because of how it can change or affect us.

1. It Encourages More Cool Devices - Globe got the 3G iPhone as an exclusive. I'm sure SMART will try to bring in phones to compete with it. Meaning we get those juicy iPhone killers (usually Windows Mobile). I am not a fan of carrier locking of devices but in this case it will have a positive effect for me at least

2. It Encourages Better Carrier Service and Rates - Apple is very iffy about service and I'm sure they are pressuring Globe to put out not only good support in terms of network/coverage and speed/stability but data plans as well. What does this mean for an ex-subscriber? Simple: if Globe improves SMART must step up and upgrade as well. We all win!

3. iTunes Might Become 'Really' Useful - iTunes may primarily be used …

iTunes App Store NOW LIVE for the PH... Mabuhay ka Steve Jobs!

That's right faithful Beanster Blog readers! Apple has FINALLY [x10] allowed Pinoys and Pinays to use their credit cards to purchase applications for their iPhones [unofficial of course] and iPod Touches. This is great news! It's not all gravy though. If you were itching to rent that movie or get that new song you are out of luck because as of this writing only applications are available.

No iPhone for me I still think it won't do as my primary mobile, a Touch would do... Yes I am seriously considering getting an iPod Touch. A 32Gb sounds just about right don't cha think?

Now who says plurk is a waste of time? This interesting turn of iTunes events [mere 2 days from the 3G iPhone North American launch, I might add] was plurk'd by JeromeGotangco. I wonder when Globe will start selling here in the PH. I also wonder how long it'll be before it's SIM unlocked and JailBroken.

SMART: Speed Tests on the Go

Conducted this AM when I was on the way to the office.

That's much closer to EDGE speeds than it is to 3G speed :(

Being Doraemon / Headset Woes

Being the resident geek among my friends I get a lot of tech support questions and requests. I'm not bothered though I enjoy figuring these things out. I also don't mind teaching people how to use their PC, mobile, gadget as long as they are willing to listen and learn. Sharing knowledge is much more fun than acquiring it. Much like Doraemon who tries to help Nobita (fortunately I don't mess up as much as my fave robot cat from the future.)
--
I've finished with Aileen's Dihya's palm Treo 750 last night did some application installs and registry tweaking.
--
Got 2 more jobs lined up for this week:
1. Diagnose Camille's palm Treo 750 - no earpiece volume.
2. Diagnose Chutball's home desktop - slow system / possible viri.
--
Damn working with 750s again. I miss my Treo 750 although I know I am better off with my TyTN2 because it has WiFi and I don't have my own PC at home. I also appreciate the tilt screen much more, I hope when the time (or urge) comes tha…

Dear GLOBE

Hello Globe Head Honchos

I am writing this blog post to remind you not to do a ROGERS [read aboot it here] and place the 3G iPhone in a fair price point for aspiring fanbois and girls.

More importantly I ask Globe to improve their services to accompany this device and all other mobiles you are selling for that matter.

I may not be getting one [until Apple opens iTunes and AppStore for the PH that is, and even then I'd have to think hard about it] but this is no reason for others not to get the only slightly chunkier Jeeez'us phone that can do 3G speeds.

The iPhone is and should be used as a connected device. Why buy one and not surf on it or watch movies or whatever? A data plan is essential to make the most of this device. I think it would be best to have capped [or else people will abuse it!] data plans for the iPhone.

4Gb / 8Gb / 16Gb plans would probably be enough for now, they should throw in FREE WiFi for all WiZ hotspots too. Add this to your existing voice plan and the …

HTC TouchDiamond vs Samsung Omnia

Gentle reminder that the 3G iPhone isn't the only new mobile on the block... :D
--
Diamond over Omnia:
* VGA display (2.8-inch, 480 x 640 pixels)
* TouchFLO 3D Home screen (better than Omnia's Touchwiz UI)
* Nicer design
* More compact body
* Lighter weight
* Active magnetic stylus (Omnia has no stylus slot)
* Touch-sensitive scroll wheel (better than Omnia's optical joystick)
* Better sunlight legibility (by a small margin)
* Standard miniUSB slot (as opposed to Samsung's proprietary custom plus)
* Dedicated graphics chip with 64MB memory
* Comes with the amusing Teeter game (uses the accelerometer)
* Has pre-installed YouTube client and MP3 Trimmer application for ringtones
* Better video playback performance

Omnia over Diamond:
* Bigger, though lower-res display (3.2", 240 x 400 pixels)
* Has a better, more solid build and finish
* Almost double battery life
* Better CPU performance (by a nice margin according to software benchmarks)
* Quad-band …

Rogers Getting Rogered by Apple for Rogering It's Customers (Ey???)

Conspiracy or Rumor???
--
Canadian carrier Rogers got the exclusive to distribute the iPhone in Canada. They decided they could shove their lopsided plans up the Canadians rear but Jobsy seems to have other plans, after the Canadians started complaining (what's that aboot ey?). It seems that Rogers' allocation have been diverted to Europe... So is Jobsy trying to kiss Canadian ass or is it a matter of the Euro customers ordering first? Does Apple really care that their primary customer [read: the carrier] is abusing it's [the carrier's] customers [read: end consumer]
