Last Sunday, I was lamenting that my Lumia wasn't getting software updates (I regularly check using Phone update in settings). Which was why I was playing with my XiaoMi RedMi 1S (now on MIUI7, it started on MIUI5) which was getting updates almost every other week. My girlfriend remarked about my Lumia. Which prompted me to do some googling on the preview build. As I've written almost a year ago I wasn't too pleased with the earlier builds and had to do a restore . Anyway in my googling I found out that my Lumia 535 had a Windows 10 upgrade but the funny thing is you had to download another app (very similar to the desktop version of the OS) to get the upgrade. My question is why not just push the upgrade via the regular phone update built in to Windows phone 8.1 like what Android or iOS? Old devices need not stay in your drawer, if they still work you can still use them. You’ve resurrected your old Windows Mobile device (in my case it is a palm Treo Pro ), you’ve already setup Exchange ActiveSync with your Outlook.com hosted Email account but you have to monitor an additional email address also hosted on Outlook.com, well this guide is for you. Let’s get to it… 1. Open Messaging and select Setup E-mail 2. Type in your credentials and hit next 3. Uncheck Try to get e-mail settings automatically… 4. Select Internet e-mail 5. Choose your name & display name 6. Incoming mail server = imap-mail.outlook.com:993 select IMAP4 select next 7. Enter your credentials (again) hit next 8. outgoing mail server: smtp-mail.outlook.com:587 hit next 9. Check Require SSL for both and done 10. You may customize download settings to your liking There you have it, you now have Outlook.com hosted email on your device together with your EAS email.

I decided to install the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack on my MSI Wind U123H and surprise surprise it broke Windows Mobile Device Center Bluetooth Syncing. I decided to try a 2 year old fix I did on my then UMPC (SONY VAIO UX280P) running Vista HP and it works on Windows 7. On the PC. WMDC/Activesync has always been a headache for most Windows Mobile users, myself included. Last week I began experiencing sync issues with my palm Treo Pro. My device would connect fine via USB or Bluetooth, start to sync but then it would get stuck trying to sync my Calendar appointments. Since my Outlook was updated and I had good backups of my PST files I went ahead and erased partnerships on both device and PC. No joy. I then decided to sync only Contacts, Tasks, Notes this worked but once I ticked Calendar WMDC appeared to freeze up. I also got an error message saying: An error occurred while syncing to your server blah blah blah, which was really odd because I did not use exchange sync. To make matters a bit more difficult to troubleshoot… The thing was my other device an HTC Touch3G was syncing ok with the same machine. So it was something wrong with the Treo. I’m sure a lot of Windows Mobile users will find this useful. -- Here’s a quick and easy way to backup/restore your PIM DATA [Contacts, Appointments, Tasks] on your Win Mo device. -- Backup: Using your File Explorer browse your device and look for the file PIM.vol now simply copy this to your Storage Card for safekeeping. -- Restore: Using File Explorer rename the PIM.vol [on device] to PIM1.vol Copy the saved PIM.vol from Storage Card to the Device root [not in ANY directory] Soft Reset and delete PIM1.vol -- NOTE: It’s best to sync your device to your computer using Activesync (XP) or Windows Mobile Device Center (Vista) and Outlook. I posted way back about subverting data connections on your Windows Mobile device. Well I found an app that eliminates the need for digging thru your settings each and every time to disable or enable data. The application is called NoData it’s up on MoDaCo, it’s free and it works on both Windows Mobile Standard and Professional devices. It’s great for keeping data costs down especially when you are overseas and roaming. Once installed you just start the application and turn off the connections you don’t want to connect. Remember you have to enable them before you can use them again, keep this in mind if you have push email activated. This works on both the palm Treo 750 and Treo Pro. By default the Side Button on your 750/Pro will have only 1 function Press and Hold. With this simple registry hack you can get an extra press. Copy the following to notepad save as .reg and apply on your device. We can easily add/customize the sliding keyboard sound on your HTC TyTN2 [or other Kaiser variants]. First we need 2 WAV files. If you've been looking at screen shots of Windows Mobile 6.1 you may have noticed that the default theme now sports a flat title bar on top. You don't need to update to 6.1 to get this though. Just a simple registry key can get you that 6.1 look you always wanted. -- Things you need: Windows Mobile Professional device Registry Editor Color codes -- Step 1: Using your registry editor navigate to the following key: \HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Today\ .tsk Step 2: Create a new binary value Name = Color_TitleFlatCenter Value = XX XX XX 00 [where XX XX XX is the color code] Step 3: Soft Reset and you are done!

Do you get huge amounts of emails on your device? How about SMS? Ever got frustrated that you had to scroll endlessly to find that one message you need to forward or keep? Well let me free you from the anxiety this Independence Day with this simple tip! -- You may not know this but your Windows Mobile device has a nifty inbox search function. Works for SMS/MMS and Emails. -- Just start typing out letters of either senders or subjects and it will automatically filter out the messages for you. [In this example I typed out 'celtics' and it filtered the emails for me in real time!] -- I have 3 Google IMAP accounts, Windows Live, and Yahoo Email syncing to my PDA [that's 5 email accounts].
