RSS [Real Simple Syndication] has been really big! Well if you're a geek like me you like to be 'In the Know'... RSS gives us information at the tip of our fingers [or in this case stylus]. For more info on RSS click here.

I discovered pRSSreader while browsing SBSH.net's PocketBreeze Forum I was looking at different RSS readers for my PocketPC and have been looking to purchase a particular kind when someone posted about pRSSreader... so I decided to take a look. Good thing I did...

The Low Down...
This application is really small! [Looking at the folder under \Program Files\pRSSreader\ it shows 270kb] the application has the ability to cache files elsewhere [i.e. your \Storage Card] therefore you won't loose valuable RAM ;-)

It features a neat Site Manager where you can manage feeds and even import/export them to the OPML format [which means you can easily migrate your subscriptions]... Thanks to dhpss for the tip!

Manual updates or automatic updates are both supported. You can specify how often updates are done... it may be everytime you sync your device or by interval [note: if you sync via GPRS you may be charged by your Operator for data].

[How updated are you?]

pRSSreader has a Today screen plugin. No more fiddling with menus or what not... just tap on it and it will launch the app. The plug-in is somewhat customizable you can choose from Brief [shows you new and unread feeds count] or Cycle which shows you the feed source, feed title, a short excerpt from the feed, and time. It even works inside PocketBreeze as a custom tab.

Additional Features:
  • pRSS Reader can be read using the D-Pad
  • pRSSreader can handle many versions of feeds: RSS 0.90, 0.91, 0.92 and 2.0, RDF 1.0 and Atom 0.3.
  • Summary View - shows you the number of new/unread/total items in your feeds. You can also use it to switch between your feeds very quickly.
  • pRSSreader have quite powerful caching abilities, it can cache images included within feeds, enclosures and it can also cache online pages for offline browsing.

Conclusion:
This is a great, and light weight application for your PocketPC's RSS needs. What's even better is it's free. As they say information is ammunition and when you have pRSSreader loaded on your PocketPC you are better equiped to do 'battle' in this fast paced world that we live in.

Darth Kegaw to Treo 750: It is Useless to Resist

I have never been one to keep my devices *as is* when it comes to the OS/Firmware… This 2nd Treo 750 will be no different. So I dusted off my old Cheetah files [trivia: the Treo 750 is codenamed HTC Cheetah] and decided to HARD SPL [this allows for non-carrier branded ROMs to be loaded] and flashed it to a Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM. Everything is proceeding as I have foreseen… and the ROM loaded without any issues. I did notice that Microsoft Voice Command 1.6 was not included in this ROM not really a problem since I own the software as well.  I’m currently syncing my PIM data and will be installing my apps over the next few days.
