Tips & Tricks|Windows Mobile Sounds & Notifications

This tutorial will be focused more on Phone Edition devices but some of the concepts here hold true for non-Phone Ed devices also.
-----
Let's begin with formats. PocketPCs can use different formats for Ringtones but only WAVs work for Notifications here are the most common formats supported [note: some device manufacturers may add different formats]. Notifications cover majority of the sound on a PocketPC, these include system alerts like detected Wireless Networks or Activesync Start/End, Reminders, SMS/MMS/E-mail alerts etc.

Formats that work as Ringtones
1. MP3
2. WAV
3. WMA
4. MIDI
Formats that work as Notifications
1. WAV

Unlike other mobiles, PocketPCs have fixed locations for Ringtones and Notifications. File locations, differ for Ringtones and Notifications. These are the most common locations that work on most devices again manufacturers may add other locations, but these are the safest

File Locations - Ringtones
1. \Windows\Rings [on device]
2. \My Documents\ [on device]
3. \Storage Card\My Documents\ [on Storage Card]
4. \Storage Card [on Storage Card]
File Locations - Notifications + Alerts
1. \Windows\ [on device]

Setting Ringtones and Notifications:
Upon placing your sound files in the proper locations they will now be accessible by the OS to be used as Sounds & Notifications.

Tap Start > Settings > Sounds & Notifications
You will see 2 tabs Sounds and Notifications, make sure you tick the corresponding options to get the sounds you like. The following screenshots are from my Treo and it has a 3rd tab called Manage also there are some slight differences with the Treo's and normal Windows Mobile Sounds & Notifications screens [I don't have another device to get screenies from]

[check all that you want/need]

[Setting an alert is simple, choose the event, choose the ring type, ring tone, vibration, LED alert, and all that apply, tap Ok when you're done]

PocketPC Phone Edition devices have 2 volumes; 1 for the System Sounds and 1 for the Phone.

-----
Setting RINGTONES per CONTACT
There are no caller groups in WM, there are Categories but you can't set tones by Categories OOTB [Out of the Box]. To set Individual tones to a Contact we must use the Contacts application. Tap on a Contact to open the Summary View then tap Menu and Edit. Scroll down to Ringtone and choose a tone from the dropdown tap ok when you are done.

-----
A NOTE ON RINGTONES LOCATED ON STORAGE CARDS:

Some devices will initialize the Storage Card slot slower and so sometimes Ringtones stored on the Storage Card are not recognized fast enough and therefore the PocketPC uses the default tone. For maximum compatibility I suggest you place tones in device memory.

-----
To save space try these tips:
Keep your tones short, 30 seconds is more than enough for a ringtone. You can also convert them to a lower quality 96Kbps would be ok, tones don't need to be super high quality. For WAVs try to keep them short as well. Convert them to a lower bitrate as well to save more space. PCM 11.025kHz, 16Bit, Mono would be ok for an alert.

This ends our short tutorial. Hope this helps. Bye for now
