palm has just announced the palm Treo 500v [for vodafone] in Europe. Codenamed the HTC Gandalf [Where's Frodo? hahahah] this time palm is going Windows Mobile Standard, this will be the first Treo with out a touchscreen. Specs are unimpressive to say the least.
Windows Mobile 6 Standard
3G data speeds on either GSM or UMTS (no HSDPA?)
A 320x240 non-touchscreen display
QWERTY Keyboard
150mb of available user storage
microSD for expansion
2 megapixel camera
Bluetooth 2.0 with support for Bluetooth stereo
4.5 hours talk time, 10 days standby
Why I'm not getting one [unless it's free hehe].
1. Windows Mobile Standard is not for me. Yep although I've owned WM Smartphones before. I always go back to full PocketPC Phone Edition which is now called Windows Mobile Professional. I just have more apps and experience with it. So I'm not in any rush to jump ship.
2. No HSDPA - this is really odd since the device will be launching in UMTS rich Europe. Maybe to lower the price and make it more affordable?
3. No WiFi - definitely a palm thing to do. But competitors like the dopod C730, Samsung SGH-i600 both have HSDPA and WLAN, both are Smartphones [WM Standard devices]. Bad move on palm's part.
