Review|SONY VAIO VGN-UX280P Part 1

[Treo vs VAIO]
Ok as I stated a few posts back I wanted a UMPC, something smaller and lighter than my current notebook. Well I gave in to the itch and got myself a SONY VAIO VGN-UX280P. It's actually a US version of the UX series of VAIO's the main difference is that it has a GPRS/EDGE modem instead of a CF card slot [it's locked to Cingular though and I haven't had it unlocked yet]. I had it loaded with Windows Vista Home Premium coz I read it was equivalent to Media Center on the XP. Anyway here are some specs:

To be honest I'm quite pleased with this device. I mean it's sleek and sexy but is still useful to a certain extent that is. Having this as my first Vista system is really nice cause I am able to take advantage of the native Tablet support in Vista. I am actually enjoying inking emails or instant messages when I am to lazy to use the qwerty keyboard. Speaking of the keyboard I feel that it lacks tactile feedback and I tend to miss some letters because I thought I've already pressed the key. It's a minor issue. The battery life is so-so about 2 ~ 2.5 hrs with wifi on. I really wish SONY didn't SIM lock the GPRS/EDGE modem. It's dumb to SIM lock a PC. I think the main issues I'd be having with this is the lack of HDD space [coming from a 100Gb notebok 40Gb is not enough especially since Vista is bigger than XP], I plan to remedy that and have already ordered a 120Gb 2.5" HDD, and the lack of a media drive to install apps or burn stuff [again easily remedied with a external device, haven't got one yet since I don't need it yet]. The good thing is most software can be downloaded and bought online besides I plan to make this a more personal PC so less work stuff will be on there. I am giving my notebook to my mom she needs to replace her 6 year old VAIO [Win 98!!!]. I'll probably get myself a bigger monitor and a keyboard and mouse to attach to the cradle at the office where I do most of my computing anyway. So far I am liking Vista, the AERO is really cool! I've also installed Office 2007 but have been only using Outlook. I've synced up my Treo and it seems that sync is a bit slower compared to my XP system. I might have a go and install photoshop just to see how it runs on Vista and this slower processor.

DaemonTools
VideoLAN VLC Player

Just basic stuff that I really use all the time :o)
